I was looking around my bathroom after spending some time in the kitchen and I realized I had accidentally achieved a goal that I set for myself years ago. I wanted to become more self-reliant. I wanted to do more for myself, but I wasn’t sure how I defined that. So things started off slowly, I had a small garden. Then I learned to make soap. Next, I learned to make candles. I began to read up on urban homesteading. But over the last few months my self reliance skills have become even more honed. Last night, I made peanut butter with raw honey from scratch. (It’s amazing by the way.) Over the holidays I made coffee body scrub, I stopped using shampoo and switched to baking soda and a vinegar rinse. I made my own barbecue sauce. I made jellies and jams. I am growing lettuce, green onions, and celery in my kitchen window. I have a long list of things I would like to see in my garden this Spring. I have learned to make breads, waffles, spaghetti sauce, and so much more. I am working on a recipe I would like to share with you soon. And, of course, I have been knitting. Sadly, as I sit here writing this, it has occured to me that I haven’t finished a single knitted item in 2014 (sans a headband). This is something I will have to work on.
