Lately I’ve been taking my New Years resolution a little more seriously. Yesterday I bought my first bottle of Castile soap. My husband had run out of shampoo and so I went on a mission to make him some. Apparently making shampoo is very easy and, even more exciting, it takes almost no time at all. It took me less than twenty minutes to make around 8 oz of shampoo. And while the ingredient list can be as long or short as you like, the most rewarding part is that you know what your family is using is natural. I spent a little time reading the label I pulled off my husband’s shampoo bottle and I couldn’t pronounce half the things on there. After a little searching, I found some articles that suggested some of the chemicals might actually cause illness. Ouch! So it’s all natural shampoo for this family from now on!
And I have been making more than shampoo lately. Yesterday at the last minute I was told that our good friend wanted to have his birthday dinner at my house instead of at his girlfriends house, because mine is closer to where he works. No problem. Oh, and he wanted pizza from scratch for dinner. So I pulled out the mixing bowls and I made three batches of pizza dough. I also made one vanilla cake w/vanilla frosting and one chocolate cake (same recipe as vanilla but w/ a cup of baking cocoa) w/peanut butter frosting. (My pizza dough recipe came from a binder we keep in the kitchen.) I couldn’t believe how simple making a cake can be. These are my first from scratch cakes and I think this might be the route I always take. Sure Betty Crocker makes good cake, but I think doing from scratch makes it even better!
Next mission: shaving cream
